"Raíz", de Miklós Radnóti

Devil's Punchbowl Falls, South Island, New Zealand.

(En preparación, por Carlos Morales)

Lager Heidenau.

A gyökérben erő surran,
esőt iszik, földdel él
és az álma hófehér.

Föld alól a föld fölé tör,
kúszik s ravasz a gyökér,
karja akár a kötél.

Gyökér karján féreg alszik,
gyökér lábán féreg ül,
a világ megférgesül.

De a gyökér tovább él lent,
nem érdekli a világ,
csak a lombbal teli ág.

Azt csodálja, táplálgatja,
küld néki jó ízeket,
édes, égi ízeket.

Gyökér vagyok magam is most,
férgek között élek én,
ott készül e költemény.

Virág voltam, gyökér lettem,
súlyos, sötét föld felettem,
sorsom elvégeztetett,
fűrész sír fejem felett.

The english translations of the poem
 ROOT

Power glides in the root, / drinking rain, living in the earth, // and its fantasy is white snow. // It rises and breaks through the soil, /  it crawls along secretly. / Its arm is like rope. // On the root’s arm a worm sleeps / and a worm sticks to its leg. / The world is rotten with worms. // But the root goes on living below. / It is the branch, laden with leaves, / that it lives for, not the world. // This is what it feeds and loves, / sending exquisite tastes up to it, / sweet tastes out of the sky. // I am a root myself now, / living among the worms. / This poem is written down there. //  I was a flower. I became a root. / A lid of black earth locks me in. / The workers on my life are done. / A saw wails over my head.”

P ower flashes in a root, / it drinks rain, lives with earth below, / and its dreams are white as snow. // From under earth it breaks upward,/ it climbs, and in sly, that root, / its arm is just like a rope. // On a root’s arm a worm asleep; / On a root’s  leg sits a worm. / The whole world is plague with worms. // But in the deep the root lives on. / It cares not a hang for the world / only for a branch that leaves heave filled. // This is admires and nurses, / send in excellent flavors, / good, sweet, sky-ripened flavors. // I am not a root myself – / it's with worms I make my home, / there, I am building this poem. // Once a flower, I have turned root, / heavy, dark earth over hand and foot; / fate fulfiled, and all is said, / a saw now wails above my head.”

Aún me sorprende vivir.

Escucho.

lentamente, cuidadosamente. Vivo.

 foamy sky

The moon sways on a foamy sky,
I am amazed that I live.
An overzealous death searches this age
and those it discovers are all so very pale.

At times the year looks around and shrieks,
looks around and then fades away.
What an autumn cowers behind me again
and what a winter, made dull by pain.

The forest bled and in the spinning
time blood flowed from every hour.
Large and looming numbers were
scribbled by the wind onto the snow.

I lived to see that and this,
the air feels heavy to me.
A war sound-filled silence hugs me
as before my nativity.

I stop here at the foot of a tree,
its crown swaying angrily.
A branch reaches down — to grab my neck?
I'm not a coward, nor am I weak,

just tired. I listen. And the frightened
branch explores my hair.
To forget would be best, but I have
never forgotten anything yet.

Foam pours over the moon and the poison
draws a dark green line on the horizon.

I roll myself a cigarette
slowly, carefully. I live.
